Unheralded Cool Movies You Should Know About - Rob Roy

An existential action flick about Scottish guys in kilts going on about honor during the middle ages? Really?

You bet.

It wouldn’t get the attention that Braveheart did a year later, but for my money, Rob Roy (1995) is as good, if not better.

While a smaller film in terms of scope (there are no battles featuring hundreds of extras dying in spectacular fashion, either real or via computer) and theme, Rob Roy delivers in spades what most movies only hope for … it takes one to another world with its own laws, expectations and severe cost of matters outstanding.

The cast is uniformly excellent … with Liam Neeson as Rob Roy, Jessica Lange as his wife, Eric Stoltz, John Hurt and Brian Cox in supporting roles … it also features an Oscar-nominated performance by Tim Roth as the villain, so memorable he nearly steals the whole movie.

He plays a fey yet deadly aristocrat. Here’s his first fight scene:

And as scary as that is, here’s something even colder:

Once his lordship sets Roth upon Neeson, it gets even uglier … suffice to say, Roy has more reasons than most to avenge himself on Roth, or “matters outstanding,” in Roy’s words.

It ends with the most spectacular sword fight, one I appreciate because it shows the fighters actually getting tired (and let’s face it, swinging a broad sword, even for the most athletic of persons, it’s gonna tire a motherfucker out at some point) and two fighters who have real reason to kill one another.

If you haven’t seen it, PLEASE rent the movie and watch the whole thing … If you’ve already seen the film and want to relive the awesomeness of the ending, here you go:

Thus endeth Monday Movie Madness.
