And … We’re Back! And A Tiny Political Rant I Simply Must Get Off My Chest …
Sorry for the blog silence … much is going on, some of which I will share later on (I know, I know, I’m a tease, heh-heh) … and we just returned to New York City and it is COLD AS HELL … I mean, seriously.
I’ve been writing like a mad bastard, even while on my trip, I had to work … but, truth be told, I love my job, I love what I do.
Meanwhile, there was this tidbit yesterday, in the news …
Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License By Louisiana Justice Of The Peace
Warning … a political rant to follow, if you’re not interested, I totally get it, check back later for more writing news and Kai pics.
Okay, the story above … sigh.
I posted it on Facebook, but I simply had to comment on it again … seeing as that I myself am IN an interracial relationship, and that I HAVE a mixed race son, it is of no small interest to me that some southern JUSTICE OF THE PEACE (ironic, that, no?) decided for another interracial couple that they should not marry … and his reasoning was that it would be bad for their children, if they should have some … in other words, their children would be marginalized because of their MIXED RACE.
I read that and became INCENSED … angrier than I have in a long time. It’s racism, pure and simple (races shall not be mixed) and it’s a terrible, terrible thing … I know that the JP claims he’s not a racist … but I don’t think he really knows what that word means … because it is exactly that, it’s exactly racism.
We saw this during the civil rights era … not all the opponents were violent members of the Klan … they were people who didn’t wish violence upon minorities … they may have even liked them, but they didn’t believe they deserved the same rights, could go to the same schools, mix with other races … in other words, they had to be separate …
And separate, as we know, is not equal.
No matter how you cut it, that is racism … racism doesn’t just live in burning crosses and white hoods … it lives in ideas and beliefs and ignorance … I don’t think this JP was a member of the Klan, and he probably did believe his reason (concern-trolling for the benefit of their future children) but he just can’t see how ignorant and wrong his “logic” is (and neglects to notice that our President himself is the product of just such a union the JP condemns) … which is, I’m sad to say, a common trait I’m finding among conservatives …
And of course, this doesn’t help that this happened in the south. I know that people get tired of hearing about racism in the south, and I know lots of good people live in the south who are not racist (I’m related / friends with many) but that doesn’t mean that it still isn’t a problem there (not just the south, but surely you must stipulate the problem is worse there) and that it doesn’t exist.
It does. Hell, I don’t argue when people tell me that New Yorkers are rude … THEY ARE!*
*They are considerably less rude than when I first moved here, and once you get into the New York vibe, you understand it … but I’m surely not gonna sit here and tell ya that New Yorkers are not blunt busybodies who oftentimes don’t have time for courtesy … no … because it’s true. We laugh it it, those who live here, but it’s true.
But no one’s rights are being denied because New Yorkers are often rude. Rights are being denied by people who trumpet racist beliefs and actions … they are actively hurting people.
Not to rag on conservatives, but if you really want to win me over and believe that you have this countries best interests at heart (and this is not about whether or not I agree with your conservatives ideas, it’s about whether or not your motives for your agenda is pure) then you really need to purge the racists from your party …
Putting up a black man as head of the RNC ain’t gonna do it, you’re gonna have to stop listening to Rush (who is definitely racist, as any google search would show) you’re gonna have to condemn Pat Buchanan nearly every time he opens his mouth, and you need to go through and slap everyone conservative who’s made an inappropriate comment about the President, Sontemeyer, all of ‘em.
You’ve demanded it of liberals when they made comments about Bush, now demand it about yourselves. Because, I have to tell ya, your party reeks of it, it REEKS OF RACISM … just look at the footage of any teabagging protest … this isn’t just a small minority of your party, it IS your party, you roll around in enough shit, pretty sure you look and smell the same as the shit itself, because … shit sticks.
You roll in enough shit, it will stick to you. And the conservative party has been rolling in some angry, hateful racist shit a whole lot as of late, I mean, a whole lot. And you shouldn’t be surprised, so stop acting like it.
You hold a racist like Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh up as your standard bearer, do not be surprised or shocked or outraged to be called a racist … that’s like going to a Klan rally and trying to claim, “Hey, I’m not wearing the hood, don’t lump me in with these guys, I’m only here because I like gatherings, etc” … it’s ridiculous, it really is.
I can accept reasonable disagreements on politics and policy … myself, what I have a problem with, is sheer lunacy dressed up as something different … racism? Hate, anger and fear dressed up as cultural identity … and it ain’t right. Just like global warming deniers, evolution deniers … all the the same, it’s terrible and it’s wrong and we should, none of us, have patience for it. We’re Americans, the one country that openly welcomes (or used to) diversity and individual rights and freedoms for everyone … and we should fight those who would piss on that, like that JP, like Rush, like Glenn, like Jim Wilson, like all of them …
Okay, I just had to get that off my chest … thanks for listening … We’ll now go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Josh,
I’m totally with you on that, that is so outrageous to read such a story.
Being also in an interracial relationship (with a beautiful mixed son) I can’t agree more about what you’re saying.
I’ve read the article and if “I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way…” is not pure racism, I don’t know what is…
Anyway, thanks for sharing, I really enjoy reading your blog.
