Giving Thanks

Want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, technically we don’t really celebrate Christmas in the James household, as that we’re both Buddhists, but I have no issue with wishing anyone else Merry Christmas (and we do give our son Christmas presents) or any holiday celebrated by anyone (be it Kwanza or Festivus) and passing on good cheer.

It seems to me that any holiday from any religion wherein we wish each other well, help those who are in need and feel compassion for others is something to be honored. Even better if it happened every day, but even one day is a good start.

Usually for us New Years is a special holiday, we reflect on the past year and focus on what we hope for in the coming one. For me, it’s about offering appreciation.

Our baby is due to arrive quite literally any day now, so I thought I’d drop in for a quick word of thanks for all the good things that have come our way this year.

I’m very thankful for my family, those in Japan and those in Iowa, thankful for all my friends, those I’ve known for years and those I’ve just met, friends and family are the only real currency in life, I sometimes think.

I’m thankful for all I’ve learned as a writer this year and especially those I work with in my career, I’m so lucky that I can pick up the phone and basically ask for guidance from a learned Obi-Wan, for that I’m very grateful. I’m so very thankful that I can call myself a professional writer.

I’m thankful to have found a dojo to train in, one with a great Sensei and fellow students … just to have an opportunity to learn a totally new martial art at this stage in my life, to empty my cup and begin again in the martial arts is really wonderful. I competed in my first tournament in juijitsu recently and just got my fourth stripe this week. I’m very thankful for that.

Above all else, high above, I’m incredibly thankful for my son Kai, who really makes life special, and my wife the Samurai Lady, who keeps everything together for us, and for the new baby boy due to arrive at any moment.

For all of those who read my blog, I wish you well and hope the coming new year brings you all you wish and have worked for, and that you’re wealthy in friends and family and fellowship.
